Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC)

U.S. federal law creates a statutory basis for the IACUC, which is responsible for assessment and oversight of UC San Diego’s Program components and facilities. The IACUC membership meets all applicable requirements including specialty veterinary expertise, scientists, non-scientists, and public membership. The IACUC meets at least monthly to review and approve proposed animal use (including proposed significant changes). The IACUC also inspects animal care and use facilities, reviews the overall program, assesses animal care and use, and receives and reviews concerns involving animal care and use.

UC San Diego strives for continual and effective cooperation and coordination between the IACUC, the Institutional Official, and the Attending Veterinarian, the triad upon which oversight of the Animal Care and Use Program rests.

The Chair of the IACUC is Michael Gorman, Ph.D. Dr. Gorman also serves as a Professor in the, Department of Psychology.
