Attending Veterinarian (AV)

US federal law creates a statutory basis for the Attending Veterinarian. The Attending Veterinarian is responsible for the health and well-being of all UC San Diego animals and maintains the authority, access and resources to oversee all aspects of animal care and use. UC San Diego strives for continual and effective cooperation and coordination between the Attending Veterinarian, Institutional Official, and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), the triad upon which oversight of the Animal Care and Use Program rests. 

UC San Diego’s Attending Veterinarian is Philip J. Richter, DVM, Ph.D. Dr. Richter is a Diplomate in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine, Director of the Animal Care Program, and a Clinical Professor in the, Department of Pathology.
